The big five-o party

Here are some photos from John's big five-o surprise birthday party.
John is an amazing man, a celebration was in order.

I still can't believe it but we did surprise him!

I booked Point Roberts Marina Club, and it was terrific. Great view, great facilities. Such helpful staff.

Such great family and friends. Mom, Deb, Kath, Dad, Laura, Mo, love you!

Gathering around the bar area!

The lounge area...

The dining room and dance floor...

We were also able to use a fourth room which had a big screen TV and a pool table where I did a photo slide show of John and friends and family - Thank you so much Ash, couldn't have done this without you.

Wallace Island

Conover Cove on Wallace Island

We had pulled into Wallace Island Marine Park a couple of times this summer to have a look, it was always very full and even with a stern tie seemed a little too tight for us, we wanted to try one more time so we headed out after lunch on Friday hoping it wouldn't be as busy. It was sunny and warm, wind was up but Treazure made good time regardless. The water smoothed out nicely inside Active Pass, we cleared Canada Customs quickly and scooted up Trincomali to little Wallace Island.

Wallace is located between Saltspring and Galiano, it is now a marine park.
There are two coves for anchoring and stern ties, Conover and Princess Coves, we chose Conover which has a shallow scalloped shaped bay that is extremely protected once inside the center entrance. A beautiful spot with great views out into Trincomali, we lucked out and found a good anchoring spot on the east side of the bay.

John rowing back after anchoring and stern tie.

There are reminents of an old resort and cabins at Conover. These photos show this cabin festooned with signs, and names and artwork from MANY visitors. It was a blast to read them, we vowed next year to make one of our own and hang it.

Great hiking trails traverse the island, very peaceful and serene, and if you are quiet you may surprise a deer or two.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We left the next afternoon to head back to Point Roberts for more crabbing. One unfortunate note- a couple in a bayliner moored at the dock decided to put their generator on the dock and let it run for over THREE HOURS, noisy damn thing, and I'm sure they would have let it run all day. We dinghied to the dock for one last walk for Daisy and I thought what inconsiderate people, I let them know how much the noise disturbed us and ruined the quiet and naturalness of such a beautiful spot. Nobody minds a generator running for a little bit, but hey it is a marine park, people come for the peace and tranquility. They sheepishly agreed to turn it off.
(Back at Pt Roberts Jeanne from another dock reported the same from Shallow Bay, Soucia. She said they ended up moving their boat to get away from the incessant thrumming of someone's generator. She should have rammed them in my opinion, ha). If you need a generator to run that long then maybe you should be at a dock with power.

Entered Georgia Straight from the bottom of Saturna (after a leisurely cruise down Navy Channel) and met some very heavy seas. We plowed thru good 4ft'ers and were glad we were heading into them and not having them slap us on the side the whole crossing like they would have had we left from Active Pass. Not a nice crossing to say the least!

John picked up Laura, and we met our dock gang for crab on the dock, again a good haul. We had so much fun that night and welcomed our new dockmate Leanne who transferred over to the 'new' party dock in her sailboat. She will be a welcome addition, and is a great gal with a Master's Boat Licence to boot- pretty impressive. Leanne tends the gas barge at the Marina. We all ended up in George and Lorna's boat as it got pretty chilly when that sun went down. Lots of wine and lots of laughs. Cheers to Dave and Barb, and Dan and Sharon.

An absolutely fabulous weekend!

More bathing beauties

We encountered these harbour seals in Saanich after leaving Todd Inlet.

I love their faces, each one quite unique...

Crab Fest at the Dock

With a crabpot like this, we should have a party!

John has everything ready, now we just need some people.

Here's some...
The dock got a little crowded, but we had fun

Hey sailor girls, those are weird lifejackets.

Don't forget your licences boys!

Lorna has seen all this before

Sharon was just relieved she got her Hawaiian inflatable palm tree back, Dan was using it as a crab float.

Waiting for the pot to boil

Gee I hope we remembered the butter and lemons

Can these guys ever pinch!

Great crab fest everyone,
lets do it again!

Crabby Time

September means Crabbing.

The season is open Wednesday to Saturday all of September. A licenced crabber may keep five crabs per day with a minimum 6 1/4 inch width and males only.

As this was our first try at crabbing we were quite excited to get our limit.

We left the marina by dinghy and and went out to set down our trap.

We had to sort out the line first, oh well.

Sometimes you get things you didn't anticipate

Back to the bottom of the sea

Everyone joins in with their own haul

Laura learns the art of the kill...

She did it

Wow

My Mom reports that Dungeness crab was selling for $39.99 a lb at Granville Island this week.

No wonder this stuff tastes so good

No wonder Dave is guarding his pot!
