I haven't posted in a while. July was more like March, came in like a lion. Every single plan we made for the month was tossed aside by the winds of fate.
First of all John was quite ill and had to be hospitalized for a bleeding ulcer which entailed a scary late night ambulance ride to the emergency. He is now doing much better after medication and Xrays for which we are very grateful. We consequently missed our dear friends big 5oth birthday bash in Birch Bay, sorry Mark and Maureen, we know it would have been a blast.
We took our family out for a nice picnic on Suchia and almost had to leave them stranded there. The boat did not perform well almost from outside the marina, didn't seem bad enough to call off the trip and disappoint everyone, but should have known better. The boat went thru a huge amount of gas, we had to leave everyone on Suchia and make a run south to Orcas where we were able to fill up. Came back to Suchia to find everyone packed up and making Survivor jokes. What a shame as we were all looking forward to exploring the island. Sorry to our gracious family - we will try again.
Turns out the motor was only running on 5 out of 8 cylinders. Ben at Westwind Marine said we were lucky to make it back considering the weight we were carrying. ( Leyburns are big packers). We pull Treazure out of the water, Ben is not happy with what he sees - tuliped valves, cracks , bad wear and tear on the engine block. But Ben is our hero! He makes some phone calls to Mercury and lo and behold a new engine is being shipped up to us from California. This is great - except it completely changed our vacation plans. Laura was to go to summer camp for two weeks while John and I explored Desolation Sound. Well Laura went to camp but John and Kalena went to work instead. Believe me I am glad nothing happened while we were way up in Desolation, and it was a huge relief to be able to get a new motor for free ( Ben you really are our hero, you really went to bat for us, thank you, thank you!) but it was disappointing not to be able to go to the place we had been plotting and planning for all winter. We were beginning to feel a little jinxed.
Westwind Marine did a great job and got us back in the water and we nervously headed out (no problems - hooray!) and managed to have a few nights at Thetis Island before picking Laura up from Summer Camp.
Lastly, we had entertained thoughts of joining our family in Whistler this long weekend but guess what - a landslide has put an end to that.
I am so glad July is over.
